Can you donate blood if you take Viagra or Cialis?
Yes in general. Sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) are not standard reasons to be deferred. The condition they treat can matter, so mention it at screening.
Sildenafil and tadalafil are PDE5 inhibitors used for erectile dysfunction and, at other doses, for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Why they usually do not block donation
They are short-acting and do not affect what screeners measure, such as hemoglobin, blood pressure and temperature. They also do not affect the safety or quality of the blood you give.
The underlying condition can matter
| Condition | Donation |
|---|---|
| Erectile dysfunction alone | Usually no restriction |
| Pulmonary arterial hypertension | Needs a clinical decision from the center |
| Heart disease alongside | Depends on the condition |
| Very low blood pressure on the day | May be deferred for that day |
What to say at screening
Name the medication and, if it is for pulmonary hypertension, say so. For occasional use for erectile dysfunction, there is generally no reason not to donate.
The screener makes the final decision on the day.
This information is general and does not replace advice from a health professional. Your eligibility is always decided at the donor screening on the day of donation. Rules change, so confirm with the American Red Cross or the blood center where you plan to donate.
