*Red cells and iron (slower):* red blood cells take several weeks to rebuild, and iron stores can take 8 weeks or more to recover.

Women and frequent donors

Women who menstruate may have lower iron stores. Frequent donors, of any sex, may benefit from checking their iron levels or taking iron if a doctor advises it.

How to know when you can give again

  • Add 56 days to the date of your last whole blood donation
  • Your donor record shows your eligibility date
  • Many blood centers send reminders or show your date in their app

Respecting the interval keeps your donation safe for you and useful for the patient.

This information is general and does not replace advice from a health professional. Your eligibility is always decided at the donor screening on the day of donation. Rules change, so confirm with the American Red Cross or the blood center where you plan to donate.
